We’re scared of WHAT now?!

Juries. Music majors are terrified of them. It determines my semester grade! I have to use the recording for an audition. My lesson prof will be in there…if I mess up he’ll kill me!
……………………
I won’t lie – I’m like this too. Worse than most. Granted, I’m no performer (and that’s perfectly fine). But I’m a musician. Let me say that again – I’m a musician. It’s my job to write music that, ideally, people will listen to! Ashlee, your whole LIFE is to perform. Not to mention that concert production skills include the ability to stand up in front of a crowd without breaking into hives.
Since I graduated from Michigan State, I’ve had the great privilege and horrible nightmare of a lot of time on my hands. So I did a very questionable thing – I dug out my old Spice Girls tapes (great…I’m old enough to say that now). I’m listening to these five terrible singers…and having an awesome time dancing to them. So I also dug out some YouTube videos of the (very few) actual live shows they did. And they had a hell of a stage presence. They loved it out there. Performing for thousands and thousands…in their underwear and 25-foot heels. No fear.
Now, I understand the many differences and I have no idea what was in their bloodstreams. But c’mon now, music majors (and I’m yelling at myself more than anyone), why the HELL do we get all hyped up about performing in school?
I am DETERMINED not to be frightened of the stage anymore. Let’s find communication and relationships and intimacy in the spotlight instead of fearing it!
